Civic Symbol Suite Released!

Check out the post on the Noun Project site

We released the first ever Iconathon Symbol Suite. All of the final symbols are now available, free to use, on the Noun Project website.

Thanks everyone!

We completed the last Iconathon of the season in New York City. We were totally blown away by how passionate and excited everyone was to get together to create new civic symbols for our cities. Right now, volunteers across the country are working on polishing vector graphics that will be released to the public domain in early October.

We hope to do another tour next year, and will be showing off the Iconathons to next years Code for America cities at the Code for America Summit in October.

The EDU Iconathon: Boston

This Saturday, Code for America will be hosting another Iconathon with the City of Boston! Held in collaboration with The Noun Project, Boston's event will focus on designing new icons for Education: schools, buses, books, pencils -- anything we can think of, anything that'll lead to useful and beautiful symbols for the public domain.

We're thrilled to have a few special guest speakers, on both the education and the design fronts, to share their knowledge and expertise:

Concepts for Seattle Neighborhoods Iconathon

This is a list of some of the concepts we will work on at the Seattle Iconathon Saturday August 27, 2011.

The new Social Symbol Gallery

Good news. Folks are clamoring to see sketches and finished symbols from the Iconathon events.

Check out the new Social Symbol Gallery.

About this gallery

We want to make the process of finishing our symbols after the Iconathon events as smooth, transparent & organized as possible. To that end, we created this "social symbol gallery" to help track our collective work and make our process transparent. We want to ensure that the symbols we create have a wide impact in both the design world and in our municipalities.

Website updates & Independent Iconathons

Just an announcement - we do have lots of notes from running the first Iconathons. We are planning to write up all our notes for anyone doing independent Iconathons.

We are fixing up this website to serve as a central place to see sketches from the different Iconathons, and to help manage the volunteer efforts.

You can check out the list of symbols, though note we are still uploading the videos and images from the events (which may take a while - there are tons of pictures.)

Tweet your ideas for Seattle's Iconathon for Neighborhoods

We've only just started Iconathons, and so we are still trying to figure out different ways of collecting ideas for which concepts are the most wanted & would be the most useful.

So far, we have been sharing google docs and asking people familiar with a topic to list ideas & concepts related to the topic.

We want to also use Twitter. It's more social! :)

How the Iconathons came to be

One day at Code for America, Chach was looking at an app she was making for to help community group organizers in Seattle. She thought about how Code for America fellow Jeremy Canfield had the fellows do a post-it note braindump of all of the concepts in cities after our month. We had this 13 page list of every sub-topics in cities - from legislation to education, public safety, arts, transportation, emergency response and many others.

Iconathon LA: Food & Nutrition

We had another great Iconathon in Los Angeles on Saturday August 13, 2011.

In Iconathons, designers, public policy people, coders and other interested citizens get together to develop new civic symbols for the public domain. These symbols can be used in new web applications, infographics, signage, policy documents, maps and anywhere else that we need symbols. These symbols also are critical in reaching across communication barriers such as language & cognition.
